The Karabalyk Agricultural Experiment Station presented a new variety of spring barley, which can be successfully cultivated for hay. According to scientists, the hay yield was 51 c/ha, while the hay yield of perennial grasses was 5.1 c/ha, reports the APK News agency.
The spring barley variety “Giant” belongs to the mid-season group. The growing season is 76 days. The variety is highly drought-resistant, able to withstand prolonged absence of precipitation and high temperatures. It has a tall stem. The weight of 1000 grains is 52.3 grams.
“This is a fodder variety that is recommended, first of all, for farms engaged in livestock farming. Along with high grain productivity, the variety can be successfully cultivated for hay. As an experiment, at the beginning of July 2023, the “Giant” variety was sown to produce hay. As a result, the hay yield was 51 centners/ha, while the hay yield of perennial grasses was 5.1 centners/ha,” according to information from the SHOS posted on the Instagram social network.
Meanwhile, according to the press service of NANOC, the Karabalyk Agricultural Experimental Station introduced a new variety of spring barley “Kairat”. It is reported that the variety belongs to the mid-season group, the growing season is 67-70 days. Over the past two years, in competitive variety testing, the average yield was 27.3 kg/ha, which is 3 quintals higher than the standard.
"Kairat" is also drought-resistant. The grain is of medium size, the weight of 1000 grains is 42-44 grams. The grain quality is good. The straw of this variety is good and strong, which makes it a good feed for livestock.
It is noted that in 2023, 9 varieties of various agricultural crops were submitted to the state variety testing of the Karabalyk Agricultural Plant:
- 3 varieties of spring soft wheat: “Ayim”, “Inzhu” and “Kordai”
- 3 varieties of spring barley: “Asker”, “Iskander” and “Athlet”
- 1 variety of lentils: “Khanshayim”
- 1st grade of grain crop: “Batyr Dala”
- 1st grade of wheatgrass grain direction: “Phoenix”.
