Kazakhstan has set a goal to increase the level of provision of domestic seeds of agricultural crops by 80% by 2028. This was announced by the Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Erbol Taszhurekov during a round table at the SCO Secretariat dedicated to issues of modern agriculture within the SCO.
He emphasized that Kazakhstan, being one of the leading agricultural countries in the region, is actively introducing advanced agricultural technologies to improve production efficiency and ensure sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
“One of the key steps towards sustainable development of crop production is the diversification of crop areas. We are reducing the area under water-intensive crops and switching to highly profitable varieties, such as oilseeds, corn, forage crops and vegetables,” E. Taszhurekov noted.
Particular attention is paid to the development of domestic seed production aimed at creating high-yielding varieties that are resistant to diseases and stress conditions. In this regard, a Special Plan for the Development of Selection and Seed Production for 2024-2028 was adopted, which envisages the creation of a domestic selection system adapted to climate change.
Recall that today, almost half of the seed material in Kazakhstan is of foreign selection.
